Adaptation: A DA Lit Contest

Sun Jan 28, 2018, 3:05 PM
The distant future. The year 2000

Ahem.

The distant future. Humanity is no longer limited to planet Earth. However, humans haven't yet evolved out of our basic Earth-adapted forms. So, despite settling on all manner of distant worlds, human bodies need the same basic things we take for granted at home: food, water, breathable air, etc.
"Out there, though, among the stars on the living worlds we already know about and on other worlds that we haven't yet dreamed of, some will survive and change and thrive and some will suffer and die."
- Octavia Butler, Parable of the Talents

The central theme of this contest is adaptation: using technology to adapt settings to our bodies, or vice versa—and what happens when those adaptations fail.

Contest Requirements

  • Your setting must either be, or be inspired by, a Kuiper Belt Object (KBO). This includes Pluto, but if you call it a planet, you will be immediately disqualified.
  • Your protagonist must be Homo sapiens sapiens.
  • Your story must be between 1,445 and 2,326 words. (No, these numbers aren't arbitrary.)

Prompt

Space humans aren't idiots. They'll have brought things to help ease the transition from Earth to not-Earth...but, inevitably, something will go wrong. Use this handy virtual die to find out which thing your intrepid (or not) protagonist has to contend with.

  1. 1: Malfunction
  2. 2: Sabotage
  3. 3: Mutiny
  4. 4: Death
  5. 5: Incompetence
  6. 6: Confusion

While you have free rein within the definition of your selected term, ONE (literally) vital piece of equipment must be affected. You can end with total systems failure,  but you can't start there.

Your ending doesn't have to be happy or sad, but it should resolve the opening conflict (whatever has gone wrong with the equipment) in some way.

Judging

Be creative, and be plausible. If you happen to use references, please link them in your artists' comments. (MLA citations not required.)

How to Submit

Your entry must be submitted as a deviation or scrap.

Note neurotype with your entry, subject "Adaptation Contest". In your artists' comments, include which KBO you chose, word count, and which prompt you got. Also, please link back to this contest.

I will let you know if you're outside the word limit (based on the word count you provide). In the interest of fairness, I will not be notifying you if your entry fails to meet the prompt criteria. You're welcome to ask questions if you're unsure about something, although I will be staying well outside the boundaries of critique.

Entries will be accepted starting February 1. Your last day to submit is 11.59pm PST (dA time) February 28, 2018.

I'm not entering, but this sounds pretty cool.
Also, the reference to Robots at the beginning is great.

I can't make it qwq. But I'll continue writing it anyway XD.
Can I like send it to you just for a review or something after the contest? Because I think I am going for a more longer story approach XD

Aww, but you've still got a day and a half to try :eyes:

I can't promise that I will be able to review, but you can certainly send it to me!

Without having used the die link provided, I just took #1 and ran with it, but the die said it should've been #4. Crud. Either way, it's going to be involving Pluto. XD

Two options, challenge yourself to hit all the right notes within the word limit, or write it anyway for yourself p: I've found that flash fiction is great for really bringing essential elements to the forefront.

Idk though, I'm already cutting enough as it is.
I already thought up a story that involved a space god and a monster
*I have a wild imagination*
I guess I'll try lol but I make no promises of being able to stay under this word count and being able to enter.
Either way I guess I'll get a decent story out of it.

I'm not going to do it, because I can't think of a way to not make it corny, but I really want someone to say "Pluto might not be a planet, but it's my whole world."

Oh, I do have a question though.  It says our setting is to be or based upon a KBO (singular).  I'm wondering if a region of them, specifically one of the classifications, would be acceptable?

Is there a stereotyped example you could start with? It's "based on" because I don't expect anyone to stick rigorously to any particular body. If you could link me to what you have in mind, that would also help.

I was looking to focus on the "Cold Classical" KBOs. Their stable orbits might have more reliable utility.

That's fine. Just include either a link explaining cold classical KBOs or a specific named body when you submit, to help with judging.

Ah, thanks for the info.  I have the story pretty much done and was going to upload it either way, but I wanted to be sure I could enter it.  It fits the other specifications.  In the past I've compromised certain story elements in order to fit into contest parameters.  It's something I always regret afterwards.

Yeah I hear that. I actually find it convenient cause I then have my "free" version to submit elsewhere, tbh.

I have a question :0

Does it have to be exactly around 1,400 words or is 1,297 words okay?

You must meet the requirements of the contest, otherwise it becomes unfair. Part of the challenge is writing successfully to the word limit :)
