Literature Gallery Restructure

Mon Mar 11, 2013, 1:36 PM

:star: UPDATED GALLERY STRUCTURE PROPOSAL - JULY 29 :star:

:new: Remember that time there was like a giant discussion about how there should maybe be microfiction and flash fiction and short stories and novella and novel-chapter categories and it was like, whoa that's a lot? Well, we had another discussion and decided to go back to the way things were a long time ago: we're proposing to ditch the length-level categorizations for prose. No more figuring out whether your work is flash fiction, a vignette, or a chapter before submitting.

Original journal below the totally relevant GIF. (Everyone loves it when GRRM does that, right? Right?!)

If you haven't browsed Literature lately, it's a mess. Sure, some of it comes from people whose work truly transcends genres (ever read the Library of Congress classification for Gravity's Rainbow?) and some of it comes from how people choose to interpret certain genres.

But a lot of it comes from people having trouble navigating the galleries.

Please keep in mind that a lot of discussion went into the updates, so when you do get mad about them do it with the assumption that there's a reason behind this. Any change that adds more complexity will get an extra-helpful side dish of questioning, fair warning. We're trying to make things simpler.

All galleries will accept text and PDF submissions unless otherwise specified.

Before you comment....

We need your feedback on this. These are your galleries, we need to know where you are willing to submit your art. But please remember a couple of things:
  • These changes aren't arbitrary. We've looked at the content submitted to the galleries and, based on how much use they get, we're merging areas that may be seen in a bookstore but just aren't well-represented on deviantART.
  • We need to be able to define what belongs in each gallery, and it needs to be sufficiently discrete. (Someday, prose-poetry. Someday.)
  • Streamlining is key. We've got users from all over the world ages 13+, and 99% of them aren't going to click all the way through to Literature > Prose > Fiction > Science Fiction > Hard > Dystopian > Chapters when they can just toss their work in Science Fiction > Chapters and add keywords like 'hard sci-fi' and 'dystopian'. If you think a subgenre is really important to have, please be prepared to back it up. Again, none of these changes are arbitrary.

All that said, WE NEED YOUR THOUGHTS! Don't expect someone else to say what's on your mind. If there's a gallery you want to see, please suggest it.

:peace:

HELLO WE HAVE MADE AN UPDATE PLEASE READ THIS IT IS FRESH AND NEW (and not in all-caps).

The galleries are getting a makeover! IF YOU KNOW PEOPLE WHO WOULD BE INTERESTED IN COMMENTING ON THIS PLEASE SHOW THIS TO THEM. Also please favorite, comment, promote, etc. All that jazz.

Before you comment:
:bulletred: Erotica as it is traditionally defined (explicit sexual acts) is NOT allowed on the site. FAQ #251: You prohibit the submission of 'pornographic literature'; what do you consider this to be?
:bulletred: Words included in the description will also work in a search, it's not just keywords.

Also, this fantastic quote from ShadowedAcolyte: "Lumping two things together does not mean that they are the same thing, it means that it makes sense to put them together." :)

Moving this comment from ShadowedAcolyte's last journal describing the poetry galleries:

My only qualm is that text-only deviations can't be uploaded to the found poetry gallery. I don't always take a picture of the process for a found poem because it gets pretty sloppy, but I'd very much like to be able to share the work in the gallery it belongs in instead of being forced to put it in free-verse. For instance, my title poems all belong in the found poetry gallery, but I have to put them in free verse instead. Who do I talk to about that?

I'd love to see a category for letters in the fictional prose section. We have one for non-fiction, but the fiction section lacks one and that makes it difficult to categorize some pieces.

I had the same thought as Exillior, I've often thought perhaps general fiction with the subcategories of childrens, YA and adult - but I understand your response as well.

I LOVE the idea of journalism and free verse being added, as well as others being merged. Honestly I think this will be for the better and make choosing a category easier to submit! I have no negative remarks or iffy questionings, I think this will be a fantastic change

Yeah, I think it could totally come back for discussion, if we see a good trend. Like historical clearly needed its own.

I have a question - just out of curiosity, not because I want to see it instated - but would General Fiction ever be stratified into other categories? I'm thinking Children's Fiction and Young Adult and Adult fiction are all very different things - not, of course, that there is anything wrong with them being together under General Fiction. Also I can see how if we want to please people by sub-grouping things according to everybody's taste, it's going to go all crazy.

We discussed this and perhaps if there was a huge niche, although the only real difference between YA and adult is the age of the protagonist. Childrens is a sea of no, so clearly there isn't much merit to having it. But as you can see we're adding Historical, as there's quite the community for it now.

I see your point about the gallery and totally agree. I also loved seeing the additions, and personally I think the way you have it really works out far better. The question about Children/YA/adult is really more to understand what the take is on these in terms of dA and what you say makes sense.

I think the debate of what YA really is and what differentiates it from other categories of fiction will always remain a matter of opinion, and I err in the camp that there's more to it than just the age difference (although seriously I can't imagine any YA novel with 40-year-old characters )... but yeah those are just semantics and it hardly matters much at the end of the day.

Yeah, like if we did it entirely based on reality, it'd look a bit different!

Haha, the problem is that every example I throw that is "they don't do this in adult/YA, only one or the other"...there actually is a counterexample. It's less steamy than New Adult, but that's also true of most Adult fiction.

I think it's safe to say there is an overlap in everything - heck, even prose/poetry have their overlaps. That said, I kinda agree with this blog: letthewordsflow.wordpress.com/… although the general idea they're giving is that YA has to have an immature character, and that's so not it.

And lol the other day I'd read a book that was YA in all aspects... and then suddenly, steamy sex scene. I have to say I was a bit surprised. And people subsequently protested that it was YA because of that. So I hear you on the topic...

Ha!

My argument is that writing a teenage main character will naturally lead to a different voice and worldview, so it's still just that one point :P But you could have a naive adult character, too, so....

You can have some teenage characters who are not quite that teenagy. I've written a few myself who are distinctly not teenagy, and I'd classify those novels otherwise (also, I did start writing a YA novel, then lots of adult stuff started happening so I don't know what it is anymore :noes:). Also, yes, you have adults who are teenagy. 50 shades being a good case in point. Was there any difference in maturity between those characters and the ones in Twilight? I rest my case. :B

Ha yeah, sometimes a book is only marketed as YA/adult cause...marketing. Apparently 'The Book Thief' wasn't originally considered YA? PinkyMcCoversong this is your thingo.

Haaaaah seriously.

It's a shame to see a lot of things go into General Fiction, but I can understand them being removed.

Does the Visual gallery now accept things other than images? :eager:

I hate clicking too much and too long. I've also experience the same lengthy problem in Fan Art, where you have to click through all the media to get the f.e. movies and maybe I want to see all fan art of a certain movie I can only use the search function. In that case I care less for media than for content. :B

The one thing I'm unsure about is merging chapters in with complete works. I'm always annoyed when I click on something and then find that it's a piece out of the middle of something longer, especially when it's not properly interlinked.

I can definitely see how it makes things easier, though.
