Fan Fiction Has a New Home

Tue May 20, 2014, 9:36 AM

As many of you have noticed, the Literature gallery gets a huge influx of fan fiction submissions. We're hoping that by having Fan Fiction under the Literature umbrella, the number of miscats in the overall gallery will drop. And, for those of us who frequent both galleries, it'll simplify submitting and finding work. :boogie:

Of course, we can't cut down on miscats without your help! Please spread the word by favoriting and sharing this journal, and by moving any of your own submissions as appropriate.

Not sure whether your submission counts as fan fiction? FAQ #572: What does deviantART consider "Fan Art" to be?

(Note that gallery updates for both Literature and Fan Fiction is in the works. Please continue to use the category that best fits your work.)

You're welcome to bring your concerns to us at any time!

Thank you for moving the fanfiction category. I can honestly say that as a fanfiction writer myself, I had no idea that there was even a fanfiction category. But a few days ago I saw that pop up in the Literature category and I took the time to move all my fanfiction chapters to that category I thought it was a new category completely and had wondered why we "didn't" have it before this week. It makes much more sense to have it in Literature. I'd never think to look in "fanart" to place my piece of literature in.

I was worried sick, I went to look up fanfictions and I saw that there was no folder, so I started freaking out.
Then I saw they moved it to the literature section and I was like "Oh, okay, that makes things easier I guess."

Now if only people started submitting fan art in the fan art section.

This is so exciting! :nuu:
I'm all for fan fiction, but it's been really hard to find original lit amongst all the incorrectly categorized fan fiction. I really hope people take notice of this and make use of it!

I honestly don't know why people submit fan fiction under literature. It had it's own place that I found very easily the first time I ever submitted a work. Maybe people don't think it's fan fiction or something, or don't know about the category or are too lazy to dig for the proper one.

All I know is it makes it harder to find stuff because you don't know where someone could have placed it.

A lot of people simply didn't know about the fan fiction gallery before; it wouldn't occur to them to check and see if a visual art gallery has its own literature subsection, and they automatically assume Literature is the catch-all gallery for written art. It's an understandable mistake and all boils down to that tricky area of terminology.

It is understandable but I still don't know why they didn't just look at where other people put their works. That's what I did.

Yes! And people also don't put keywords, either... And then complain when they don't get much exporsure ^^;

I'm not one to put keywords in either  honestly I don't care if people stumble across my art or not. I used to but now, meh. If people find it they find it if they don't they don't.

I wholeheartedly agree with JZLobo - being an active member of the community helps a lot more than keywords. If you don't participate, people aren't going to find you.

Yes indeed!

What I meant about the keywords was directed at writers of FanFiction... Since it's very specific writing (characters, fandom, genre, pairing) people often search specifically. It can be hard to find without the keywords.

For example, typing Naruto will get you a lot of stories, but if you wanted a story with NarutoxSasuke, you'd need to type something like NaruSasu, etc. But if they didn't write that somewhere in the summary or the keywords, then it wouldn't show up in the results, thus that story misses out on a viewer

Oh, of course. It plays a part, there's no doubt about that. I'm just of the mindset that if you give, you get back.

Keywords don't contribute as much as you'd think. Sure, they make it slightly easier for readers to find you, but only if said readers are actively looking. If you really want exposure, you have to put yourself out there, and that means being an active part of the community. Engage other people, comment on their artwork, post in the forums, etc. Actually, in my personal experience, the forums are the best way to get attention, because you're in there, interacting with people, seeding links to your page with every post you make.

Yes Indeed. The very best way is to GET YOURSELF OUT THERE. Post a lot. Comment a lot. There are places where you can swap critique, llamas, etc... All ways to get more people seeing your page. ^^

What I meant about keywords was aimed specifically at fanfiction...

Since there are set parameters such as a pairing, theme, or fandom, people often searches for those things in particular. And if the keywords aren't there, it's can be hard to find them~

Yes! I'm sure it will surprise no one that I'm happy about this. :D I mean, I think I've blabbered enough about how - at least in the fandoms I'm in - there's such a clear division between the fanart and fanfic on most of the places I hang out that it seemed to make no sense to have fanfic grouped under fanart.

Not necessarily. There's been a fan fiction gallery on dA for years. The only thing that's changes is that it's a bit easier to find.

(Umm, what are miscats? ;P Of course, 90% of my fan-fiction poetry does involve cats, but I never thought I might be miscatting them. I'd better check them over properly and re-cat them if I need to. Can't have any miscatted stuff in my gallery, now can I? :D)

Hopefully, Fan Fiction will have its own poetry section soon. I'm not a big fan of the stuff, but I know there's enough people producing it to justify a gallery.

I would have thought that Fan Fiction would have implied Literature already. 'Cause you know Fan FICTION! I probably havn't payed to much attention to it since, I don't read to much fanfiction on here.

Fan Fiction kind of awkwardly straddles both fan art and literature. It's been a subsection within the FAN art gallery for a while. Fan Art is the gallery for all the "derivative" work. The problem is, that made it hard to find for newer members who weren't that familiar with the gallery system, and just submitted their fan fics to Literature anyway.

Another update to the lit galleries? Didn't we have one last year? dA staff are being really active, my first 3 years here hardly anything changed at all.
Cool that fan fiction is under the lit galleries though, personal misgivings about the genre aside, it's still literature. :)

If I remember correctly, on of the cats was taken out and incorporated into the others... can't remember which one though... or was that just announced and not yet executed?
That's a highly probable possibility, my first 3 years here I was so far out of the loop I didn't even know there was a loop.
